What is mangosteen?
Alternate name: Garcinia mangostana L.
Mangosteen is a tropical fruit that is grown primarily in hot, humid climates of Southeast Asia such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
Mangosteen is a dark purple fruit about 2 to 3 inches in diameter – the size of a small peach or apple. Mangosteens are unrelated to mangos.
Instead of peeling it like an orange, a mangosteen is typically opened by pressing firmly or twisting the outside until it breaks apart.
The hard rind can be nearly one inch thick. At the center is the soft opaque white fruit, which resembles a head of garlic but tastes slightly sweet and tart.
Mangosteen seed also contains essential vitamin for human body, which are linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linoleic acid (LNA) - with linoleic acid being the most complete fatty acid. There are two basic categories of EFA's (essential fatty acids) - omega-3 and omega-6 which include linoleic acid and gamma-linoleic acid.
The body is not capable of manufacturing essential fatty acids, while the fatty acid arachidonic acid can be synthesized in the body from linoleic acid.
Fatty acids are needed for normal growth and behavior and help with healthy cell membranes, a well balanced hormone level and properly working immune system. They are also essential acids that bring youthful appearance, shiny hair and healthy body.
Why do people use mangosteen?
People usually eat mangosteen as they would any other tropical fruit.
In Southeast Asia, the rind or pericarp has been used for medicinal purposes for generations. According to folklore, rind of Mangosteen was used to make a tea for conditions such as diarrhea, bladder infections, and gonorrhea. An ointment made from the rind was applied to skin rashes.
Today, rind has been found to contain the compounds alpha-mangostin, beta-mangostin, garcinone B, and garcinone E, which are collectively called Xanthones.
Laboratory studies suggest xanthones have anti-cancer effects when they are studied in test tubes. Mangosteen has also been found to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties in test tube studies.
What is Xanthones?
To understand how special Xanthones are we need to first understand how the body creates disease and illness.
In recent years scientists have made discoveries that are leading them to believe that all illness begins at the cellular level through a process called cellular oxidation. It's this process that breaks down the cell and causes a change in cellular DNA. Cellular Oxidation is caused by millions of molecules in our bodies called Free Radicals.
